Construction worker pulled from trench in Peekskill

A construction worker was pulled to safety in Peekskill today after being buried alive inside a 10-foot trench.

Coworkers say they had nearly finished digging a drainage ditch behind a home on Hillcrest Lane when the exterior walls suddenly caved in, piling dirt, rock and debris on top of one of the crew members.

The other workers and the homeowner acted quickly to get the man's head out from beneath the dirt. Firefighters were then able to completely remove the victim, who is being treated at Hudson Valley Hospital.

Police say the trench will be shut down until it can be inspected by officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
