Mount Vernon police crack down on crime

Police in Mount Vernon are continuing a crackdown on violence in the wake of several shootings in the city.

A checkpoint was set up last night on West 1st Street, with cars being pulled over and checked. Drivers who attempted to turn off of West 1st Street to avoid the checkpoint were stopped as well.

Police have made two arrests as a result of the checkpoint, one for a DWI and another for a minor offense.

Checkpoints will continue to be set up in random spots in the area. Residents can continue to expect an increased police presence also on West 3rd Street and the surrounding area.
