Cops: Truck driver may not have known about detached tires
Police believe the truck driver in a fatal crash on I-95 may not have known that his tires became detached.
Investigators now want to question the driver of the tractor-trailer and an eyewitness who, witnesses say, spoke to the truck driver shortly after the accident in Port Chester.
Officials say a Larchmont woman was killed, and her elderly mother was injured, after a tire from an 18-wheeler struck the car she was driving in. Officials identified the deceased driver as 62-year-old Adele Mancuso. Mancuso's mother, Constance Casalino, 82, survived and is reportedly in stable condition at Stamford Hospital.
According to investigators, the truck was traveling south yesterday afternoon. Police say as the driver exited onto I-287 at exit 21, the tires came off, then flew across three lanes of traffic and ended up on top of Mancuso's car in the northbound lane, crushing the roof and windshield.
Police say they tracked down the truck driver in New Jersey. He has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
