Mayoral race in Mount Vernon gets heated

The four Democratic candidates for mayor in Mount Vernon staged a heated debate last night.

Incumbent Mayor Clinton Young struck first attacking former mayor Ernie Davis, whom he defeated four years ago, accusing him of leaving the city in dismal shape. "We were in deep water when it came to crime. Deep water when it came to scandal and corruption in City Hall. Deep water with decay and infrastructure."

Mayor Young was the target of comptroller Maureen Walker, who said his administration "raided the fund by $2 million and used it for salaries for people who were totally unqualified in these jobs."

The Democratic primary on Sept. 13.
