Mamaroneck River at risk of flooding due to Hurricane Irene
Residents in Mamaroneck are gearing up for Hurricane Irene in case the storm gathers strength before it hits upstate New York Sunday.
The First Baptist Church on Howard Avenue is especially concerned because the Mamaroneck River runs through its backyard. In 2007, the church faced major flooding, with water reaching the ceiling. Since that day, precautions have been made like putting bricks along the basement.
Other residents are also concerned with the river flooding. During the last flood, Elizabeth Covington lost her house.
"We got our bags packed in case we have to leave,? she says. ?We hope we don't have to.?
