Some residents defy Mamaroneck mandatory evacuation

Despite a mandatory evacuation order by officials in Mamaroneck, some residents refused to budge from their homes.

Officials say the storm may cause flooding that would make it impossible for emergency crews to reach people, necessitating the evacuation.

Residents in the evacuation zone had until 5 p.m. Saturday to leave. Some however, chose to stay behind and ride out the storm at home.

Those who did heed the evacuation order, but did not have anywhere else to go lined up at several locations to be bussed to public shelters.

Officials have set up an emergency shelter at Mamaroneck High School for residents wishing to ride out the storm there.
