National Guard troops deployed to Hudson Valley
(AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is more than doublingthe number of National Guard troops deployed for Hurricane Irene to1,900 as the storm closes in on the state.
Cuomo announced Saturday afternoon that the additional 1,000guard members will be deployed to New York City, Long Island andthe lower Hudson Valley. He says they will assist with trafficcontrol, evacuations, sandbagging at the World Trade Center siteand will perform other duties.
National Guard soldiers and airmen are being sent Saturday fromacross New York to the downstate areas expected to bear the bruntof the hurricane.
Many of the troops are headed to Camp Smith and Stewart AirNational Guard Base north of New York City and to the FarmingdaleArmed Forces Reserve Center on Long Island.
