Man dies after boating accident in Croton River

One man died at the hospital hours after a small boat he was riding in with four friends capsized in the rough waters of the Croton River.

A witness called 911 after seeing the boat flip over in the river, where the water was still moving at 40 mph. Dive and rescue teams, along with the police and fire departments, attempted a rescue, only to have another boat capsize, sending three firefighters to the hospital.

Four of the boaters were rescued, and the fifth died hours later at the hospital.

"This was a very bad time to take a ride on the river," said Croton Mayor Leo Wiegmann.
