Yonkers residents rescued by boat after Irene

Despite a mandatory evacuation, some residents in Yonkers, specifically those near the Saw Mill River, chose to ride out the storm and had to be rescued by boat.

Many along Clunie and Nepprehan avenues refused to leave and were faced with a deluge of rain water, running down the streets and into homes as the river crested. Yonkers firefighters were out on boats, braving the several feet of water to rescue those residents.

Residents who did stay, say they knew the waters would rise, but didn't expect it to be as bad as it was.
