Cross River man killed while boating on Croton River after Irene

Officials are still trying to figure out why five men decided to go rafting down the Croton River in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene last night.

Rescuers say that the raft capsized in the turbulent waters and sent the men floating downstream.

One of the first men rescued out of the river, Peter Engel, of Cross River, died from his injuries.

Another boater, Brian Doodley, of Yorktown Heights, was forced to cling to a tree for two hours until he was rescued. Officials say he suffered from hypothermia.

Officials are warning people to stay out of the rivers until the currents subside.
