Scarsdale nursing home copes without electricity

Staff and patients in a Yonkers nursing home are trying to cope with a power outage that may not end until later this week. Tropical Storm Irene forced the lights out over the weekend at the Sprain Brook Manor Rehabilitation Center, and Con Edison crews have installed an emergency generator. All kitchen and hallway lights have been kept on using the back-up method, but residents have no lights in their rooms. As for meal times, residents say they improvised with the help of the staff. "We couldn't use the elevator," patient Joni Campbell said. "So we made a food chain with about 40 people. We passed trays from the ground floor to the third and the second." Con Edison officials are working in the building's parking lot, where they are removing uprooted trees and a fallen utility pole.
