Officials: 15 arrested after fight at Rye Playland

Officials say 15 people were arrested when a large fight broke out today at Rye Playland after a large group of Muslim women were denied access to rides because they were wearing traditional headgear.

Westchester Parks Department Commissioner Peter Tartaglia says the fight broke out when the women, who were each wearing a hijab, were being given refunds. The woman, members of the Muslim American Society of New York, were in the park celebrating the end of Ramadan.

Witnesses described the scene as a riot, when four or five women started to fight. Some also say county police overreacted while subduing the women.

Ali Alihazali, who took cell phone video of the incident, says police also took down several other people abruptly.

Tartaglia says any kind of head gear is not permitted on the rides for safety reasons.

Officials say 12 Muslim men and three Muslim women were arrested.

Two park rangers were injured and taken to a local hospital.
