4th of July weekend under way with 'Getaway Day'
People all over the tri-state area are hitting the roads and taking trips for the long July 4th weekend.
According to AAA Travel, the July 4th weekend is historically one of the nation's busiest holidays.
However, the agency says travel is down this year with car traffic expected to be down by about 3 percent.
Gas prices are being blamed for the travel decrease. This week, the average price for a gallon of gas in New York is $3.86.
Still, traffic in the Hudson Valley will be heavy this weekend. The New York State Thruway Authority says the Tappan Zee Bridge corridor in Westchester and Rockland counties will likely be the busiest section of the Thruway, particularly headed north at the start of the weekend and south as it ends.
AAA also says air travel will continue to see a rebound that started last year.
More than 3 million travelers will fly this holiday weekend which is a 9 percent increase from last year.
