Report: Closing Indian Point could have negative impact

According to an official report from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, closing the Indian Point nuclear plant could have adverse economic and environmental impacts on the area.

The report claims if Indian Point is closed, it could lead to a serious power shortage and higher energy costs for the area, as Indian Point is estimated to provide up to 25 percent of its electricity. The study also claims any replacement power plants could increase air pollution.

Despite these claims, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) says he still wants the power plant closed down. The environmental group Riverkeeper, one of Indian Point's major opponents, also disputed the report, saying it is possible to increase energy efficiency by switching to a sustainable energy source.
