Cleanup begins after strong storms strike Rockland County

The cleanup is beginning after yesterday's storms uprooted trees and knocked out power to thousands.

For Mel Israel, of New City, the storms came in as a shock when the rain turned to hail and the winds picked up.

Israel said the storm threw around patio furniture before a large tree crashed into his home.

"We walked out of the room quickly and within 3 seconds I'd say the ceiling came down," said Israel.

Israel says he and his wife will have to stay in a hotel until repairs are made on their home.

Officials with Orange and Rockland Utilities say that almost everyone who lost power during the storm has had their electricity restored.
