Witness: Couple who jumped off Tappan Zee had suicide pact
A couple from upstate jumped off the Tappan Zee Bridge together Tuesday in what a witness described as a bizarre suicide pact.
Keith Shearn was first on the scene when it happened around 9:00 a.m..
Shearn was heading to work in Yonkers when he noticed a car slow down on the bridge. He says a 44-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman from Ithaca got out of their Chevy Tahoe and were naked.
Shearn described the scene, "She lovingly held his hand, climbed up on the hood of the Tahoe, never letting go of his hand. It was almost like they rehearsed it."
Shearn got out of his car and tried to talk to the man, "I said are you sure you want to do this? And he just said yup, yup twice."
While police haven't officially ruled this a suicide, Shearn, a volunteer firefighter, has no doubts that is the case. "You just wonder what they were thinking, the calmness of it was surreal, it was surreal, it was like they were going to go no matter what."
The woman, Alfa Choice, died at the scene. The man identified as Christopher Shears has been moved from Nyack Hospital to Westchester Medical Center in Vahalla.
