Car flips off parkway into Bronx River

Officials say a woman was injured this morning when her car flipped off the Bronx River Parkway and landed in the Bronx River.

Police say 24-year-old Amanda Diaz, of New Rochelle, was driving northbound on the parkway near the Bronx/Westchester border at about 9:00 a.m. when she sideswiped another car. They say she then lost control of her car, flipped over the guardrail, slid down the embankment and landed upside-down in 2 feet of water.

County police say two Good Samaritans, including the driver Diaz sideswept, jumped out of their cars and pulled the woman to safety.

The northbound side of the parkway was completely shut down and traffic was backed up for miles while crews worked to clear the scene. The road was reopened by about 10 a.m.

According to investigators, Diaz was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in The Bronx, where she is expected to fully recover.
