Power outage sparks Yonkers evacuations amid heat wave

A power outage in Yonkers forced the evacuations of the Riverfront Library and the Board of Education in the middle of today's heat wave.

Officials say the buildings were shut down as a precaution at around 1 p.m. due to a lack of air conditioning. Many residents say they were upset because they had come to the library to cool off indoors.

According to Con Edison, the outage was caused by a tripped circuit breaker. It says some of the power has been restored, but that both buildings will remain closed for the rest of the evening.
