Local rep. facing heat over 'illegal' BX apartment

A local congressman is facing criticism over allegations of co-owning an illegal apartment in the Bronx. Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) has a small ownership interest in a building, whose basement apartment has been repeatedly cited by New York City building inspectors. It has yet to be shut down, and Engel denies anything illegal was happening inside. Fellow Westchester Democrats say they support Engel's side of the story. "It was clear he was not the majority holder," said Reginald Lafayette, the Westchester Democratic chair. "He was a minority holder and had no clue what was going on." Engel reportedly owns 24 percent of the building, sharing the rest with a Bronx businessman.
