White Plains group helps same-sex couples with legal concerns

New York's marriage equality law goes into effect Sunday, and many hopeful same-sex couples looking to get married attended a seminar in White Plains to have legal questions and concerns answered about marriage.

"I don't know what we have to do," said Carolyn Hoffman, who said she and her partner are getting married next weekend on their silver anniversary. "What has to change? What the ramifications are in terms of taxes?"

Hosted by the LGBT group The Loft, the clinic was held to instruct the dozens of couples in attendance on the legal side of marriage. Topics covered included finances, protecting children and divorce. Organizers said the seminar wasn't meant to scare anyone, but rather to advise people to be practical.

"This is a wonderful time for the LGBT community," said Loft member David Juhren. "But we also have to take a step back, take a breath, and realize this is a responsibility."
