New Rochelle fire commissioner retires after 45 years

Raymond "Doc" Kiernan, New Rochelle's fire commissioner, was honored yesterday after he announced he is retiring after 45 years of service.

In his 45 years with the fire department, Kiernan rarely missed work, accruing 503 sick days. He said his love of being a firefighter is what motivated him to keep coming into work.

"You never wanted to miss a day because you didn't know what was going to happen next," said Kiernan, who added it was going to be "very difficult" for him to leave.

Kiernan's last day as fire commissioner is July 30.
