Police put scrutiny on teens' risky bridge jumping

Several Internet videos that show teenagers jumping off the old Putnam railroad bridge into the Croton Reservoir have caught the attention of authorities.

Helen Bart says she never knew her sons had taken the dangerous plunge until recently, but says kids have been doing it for years as a so-called right of passage.

Last year, 19-year-old Brendan Frail fell from the bridge and was killed.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and local police departments have beefed up patrols in the area to stop the jumps. The DEP says it has issued 26 summonses at its reservoirs this summer because of dangerous activities such as bridge jumping.
