Rockland teen recovers after bear mauling in AK
The Rockland teen mauled by a grizzly bear while taking a survivor skills course in Alaska has been upgraded from serious to fair condition
Joshua Berg, of New City, is starting to improve after undergoing an eight hours of surgery.
Berg was in his 24th day of a 30-day outdoor skills training course in Alaska when he and six others in his group were attacked by a mother grizzly walking with her cubs.
Berg's parents released a statement in which they thanked the people caring for their son. "We're grateful to the surgeons, physicians and nurses who are caring for our son," they said. "We appreciate the efforts of the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Air National Guard, and Josh's fellow National Outdoor Leadership School students who helped him. We are so thankful for the outpouring of love and support from our family and friends."
