'Big Lots' truck catches fire in Walkill

Firefighters battled a truck fire this morning after a tractor-trailer full of cargo burst into flames.

A tractor-trailer hauling a load destined for a "Big Lots" store had brake fire coming off the Route 17 ramp in Wallkill around 6:00 a.m.

The entire tractor-trailer became engulfed in flames, destroying the full load. The fire was so intense it melted the pavement. Police say the compressed air from brake lines fueled the fire. Officials add the truck driver was uninjured, and say that if he hadn't pulled over so quickly, it could have been a tragedy.

Emergency crews had to cut the tractor-trailer in half to get it out of the area.

Parts of routes 17 and 211 had to be closed down for a while due to the fire.
