Scarsdale manhole explosion sends black smoke into sky

Con Edison says it believes underground power lines may be to blame for a manhole explosion that sent clouds of caustic black smoke into the sky this afternoon.

Officials say the incident occurred on Scarsdale Avenue near Popham Road.

The explosion led authorities to evacuate more than 100 people from surrounding apartments and businesses, and close down the surrounding roads due to fears that the smoke could contain carcinogenic PCBs.

Police say that no injuries have been reported as a result of the explosion.
