Red Cross helps Haverstraw families after blaze

The Red Cross is helping more than a dozen people in Haverstraw who are now homeless after a fast-moving fire in their building yesterday afternoon.

Investigators say the fire started in the kitchen of a third-floor apartment at 173 Broadway at around 2:30 p.m.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze, but are expected to make quick recoveries. Fire officials say that the people who live in the apartment where the fire began had just moved in, and have now lost everything.

Investigators say the cause of the fire appears to be accidental.
