Woman gets 9 years for stealing from dead friend

A Yonkers mother of two was sentenced to nine years in state prison today for burglarizing the home of a friend, just 24 hours after he was killed in a motorcycle crash.

According to the Rockland district attorney, 30-year-old Paula Izurieta and her boyfriend at the time, Ivan Murat, burglarized Richard Serpico's Congers home in July of last year.

Prosecutors say the duo took everything they could and returned for more, but were confronted by Serpico's relatives on their second trip. Police were called and both Izurieta and Murat were arrested.

Murat pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years in prison. Izurieta, who has maintained her innocence and opted for a trial, was also given five years probation after her release.
