12 White Plains families displaced by leaky roof

Twelve families have been displaced after last night's rain and strong winds ripped the tarp off the roof of their apartment building.

After the storm started late yesterday afternoon, strong winds tore the tarp off the building's roof, allowing rain to seep inside. Residents of the building on O'Dell Avenue were evacuated by police and firefighters when water started to leak through, causing the plaster ceilings to cave in. Residents from the 12 apartments on the upper floor then spent the night at a nearby motel, and landlord Joe Castellano said he'll pay for the motel rooms until they can come home.

Castellano said work was already being done on the roof when the storm hit, when the winds blew off the tarp protecting the repairs. A new temporary roof has been put in place, but it is not known how long it will take until all the work is finished.
