Bedford Hills vet treats exotic pets

Westchester County residents with sick rats or injured parakeets needn't fret: there's a 24-hour on-call local vet specializing in uncommon pets.

The Veterinary Center for Birds and Exotics is the only all-exotic animal hospital in Westchester and it handles about 12 to 17 appointments per day.

Owner and veterinarian Dr. Laurie Hess says she has 17 years experience providing medical and surgical care for birds, rodents and reptiles.

Hess says she urges owners to take their pets in for annual checkups rather than wait until they get sick.
