Boil water advisory issued for thousands of Nyack residents

Officials in Nyack have issued a boil advisory for more than 15,000 residents after unsafe levels of coliform bacteria were found in the water.

"It's an indicator that means other, more serious bacteria can be present," said Village of Nyack Water Department Superintendent Harry Williams.

Officials say that infants, the elderly and persons with immune deficiencies should avoid drinking water to prevent serious complications caused by the bacteria.

Crews say they will be flushing the water supply system and adding more chlorine to reduce the coliform levels. They say the process can take three to five days.
