2 dead after horrific 1-car crash in Yonkers

Two people are dead after a horrific pre-dawn crash on the northbound side of the New York State Thruway in Yonkers.

Police responded to the deadly one-car accident at 5 a.m. Both 27-year-old Ossining residents, a man and a woman, were killed on impact.

The vehicle hit and wrapped around a pole that holds signs above the Thruway. Police feared that pulling the car apart from the pole could cause the signs to fall onto the road. A crane had to remove each sign first, which were set aside while emergency crews worked.

Investigators say it appears the victims were heading back from the city to Ossining when the crash occurred.

Police estimate that the driver was going at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Autopsy reports will confirm whether alcohol played a role in the accident.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the New York State Police at 914-769-2600.
