Police: Street racing may have caused fatal Yonkers crash
Police are investigating whether illegal street racing caused a fatal accident on the New York State Thruway in Yonkers yesterday.
Police say Travis Clark, 27, and Jillisa McCarthy, 20, were killed when the car they were in crashed into a pole near the entrance to the Cross County Parkway. The car hit a guardrail, flipped off the road and wrapped around a metal stanchion supporting an overheard highway sign.
"I heard some screeching, then a big booming sound like a bomb," witness Charles Short said. "I turned around and it was this car right here. The horn was blowing and smoke was coming out."
Clark was pronounced dead instantly. McCarthy was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she died soon thereafter.
According to the medical examiner, Clark died of massive internal injuries. Authorities are awaiting toxicology reports to see if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. McCarthy's autopsy is expected to be completed today.
