Plane crashes near Dutchess County Airport; 2 killed

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating after authorities say two people died Tuesday afternoon in a plane crash near the Dutchess County Airport.

Arlene Salac, of the Federal Aviation Administration, says the pilot of the Cessna 172 was practicing touch-and-go landings and was approaching a runway at the airport when it crashed just after noon in Wappinger.

One of the people on board was pronounced dead at the scene and the other died at St. Francis Hospital. The identities of the victims have not been released at this time, but one is from Dutchess County and the other from Putnam County.

Investigators say they are unsure who was piloting the plane at the time of the crash because it has dual controls.

The NTSB will continue its investigation after it moves the plane to a nearby hangar tomorrow.
