Lawmakers push to expand Indian Point evacuation zone

A group of Westchester County lawmakers met today to promote their opinion that the evacuation zone around the Indian Point power plant should be expanded from 10 to 50 miles.

Westchester County Legislator Mike Kaplowitz (D-Somers) introduced a new law today that would demand that the NRC and FEMA expand the evacuation zone around the Buchanan plant.

Even Kaplowitz admits that evacuating a 50-mile radius that includes some of the Hudson Valley's largest cities would be difficult, but he added that U.S. officials recommended a 50-mile evacuation for Americans who are near the Fukushima nuclear reactors in Japan.

Kaplowitz is hoping to urge the New York congressional delegation to push for a law in Congress mandating the 50-mile evacuation zone for Indian Point.
