WC students donate hundreds of pajamas, books to needy

It was a not-so-typical day at the School of the Sacred Heart in Yonkers this afternoon as students donned pajamas to school in celebration of a recent charity drive they held that collected more than 1,000 pairs of pajamas for needy local children.

The high school students were able to round up 1,167 pairs of pajamas, and more appear to be pouring in. Elementary school students there were able to collect some 586 books, all of which will be distributed through a local charity, The Pajama Program.

Organized by Genevieve Piturro, an Irvington woman who used to read books to homeless children, The Pajama Program will distribute all of the donated goods to 35 different local shelters. "It stops my heart, I cannot believe all of the enthusiasm and the compassion that these kids, who are so blessed, have," Piturro said.
