Likely candidates discuss Yonkers mayoral race

While there have been no official announcements yet, some likely candidates to run for Yonkers mayor are already trying to drum up support from their potential constituents.

City Councilman John Murtagh (R), former City Council President Richard Martinelli (R), City Council President Chuck Lesnick (D) and state Assemblyman Mike Spano (D-N.Y.) all sat down to discuss the impending race on News 12 last week.

Murtagh says that his experience on the city council has helped him to see the progress that has been made in the city, and the remaining challenges that will have to be met in the coming days and years.

Martinelli says that he would bring a new, more business-style approach to the city in the hopes of expending the local tax base.

Lesnick says that any potential mayoral candidate will have to focus heavily on the budget issues currently facing the city, especially the education budget, things which he has already made priorities.

Spano, who is more hesitant to suggest that he is running, says he is still consulting with community leaders and his family to try and decide how he can be most helpful to the city.
