Westchester to pay $6.75 million for wrongful conviction

Westchester County lawmakers have approved a $6.75 million settlement for the wrongful conviction and imprisonment of Jeffery Deskovic in the murder of Angela Correa in 1990.

Deskovic, who was 16 at the time, confessed to the murder after a seven-hour interrogation.

In 2006, DNA evidence exonerated Deskovic and he was released from prison after 16 years.

In 2007, Steven Cunningham confessed to the murder of Correa. He was already imprisoned for strangling his girlfriend's sister.

While the settlement ends his fight with Westchester County, his cases against police departments in Peekskill and Putnam County continue.
