Fire chief: Mom drives minivan into Hudson, kills 3 kids, self

Police in Newburgh believe that a reported domestic dispute may have played a role in an incident in which a local mother drove a minivan packed with three of her own children into the Hudson River, killing them all. Investigators say the mother let her fourth child, a 10 year old, out of the car shortly before she drove it off of a boat ramp on Washington Place just before 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The child was able to run to a nearby firehouse, but by the time emergency responders reached the Hudson, the car was already submerged in 10 feet of water. The mother, two boys, aged 5 and 2, and an 11-month-old girl were all found dead inside.

Newburgh police say their officers were called to the woman's home a short time before the incident on reports of a domestic dispute, but found no one at the residence.
