Republican Yonkers mayoral candidate kicks off campaign

A former City Council president officially threw his hat in the ring as a Republican candidate for Yonkers mayor yesterday.

Richard Martinelli kicked off his campaign at the Polish Community Center. Martinelli says if elected, he would tackle the city's budget shortfall by "trying to streamline government [and] try[ing] to do more with less, like we do in business."

Though Martinelli is the first to announce his candidacy, there are nearly a half dozen other hopefuls looking to replace current Mayor Phil Amicone.

Both Republicans and Democrats in Yonkers will hold their official nominating conventions next month.
