NY lawmakers propose rescue dogs as state dog

(AP) - Louisiana has the Catahoula Leopard Dog.Massachusetts has the Boston Terrier. Maryland has the ChesapeakeBay Retriever and Pennsylvania has the Great Dane. So what's NewYork's official state dog?

There isn't one. Yet. But two state legislators are proposingthe "rescue dog" as New York's official dog to promote adoptionof dogs from shelters.

The measure is sponsored by Assemblyman Micah Kellner and Sen.Joseph Robach. Kellner says shelter dogs make fine pets and it'stime for the state to "throw these dogs a bone."

But what about rescue cats? Maryland's state cat is the calicoand Maine has the Maine Coon cat, but New York has no officialfeline.
