Yonkers looking to reinvent image with new housing units
As groundbreaking begins on a new affordable housing project in Yonkers, city officials are not only touting the benefits of the nearly 100 housing units the project will provide, but also the benefits to the community that such a development is already appearing to conjure.
Yonkers IDA President Ellen Lynch says that the 92-unit project being built along North Broadway near Wells Avenue will provide a new draw for working families who want to live in the downtown area, adding that the project is also creating a boom for local businesses by bringing more foot traffic and jobs as a result of the construction. Another major contribution the project will make to the area will be a new municipal parking garage, to be built just north of Phillipse Manor, which will provide long-needed parking in the neighborhood.
Lynch added that officials also hope the project will inspire other developers to begin projects in the downtown section of Yonkers.
