8 injured in Mt. Vernon ambulance crash

Police say eight people were injured yesterday in a rush hour crash that involved an ambulance and three other vehicles in Mount Vernon.

Investigators say it happened yesterday afternoon at the intersection of South Fulton and East 5th streets, a spot that neighbors are calling notoriously dangerous.

Eyewitnesses say the ambulance was on its way to a call with its lights on when it was struck by a Cadillac. They say the ambulance flipped onto its side and swiped a nearby SUV, and then was hit by another car.

Authorities say the eight people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the accident remains under investigation.
