Cops: Day care where 5-month-old died may be illegal

Authorities say that an Ossining baby sitter may have been running an illegal day care center when a 5-month-old girl died in her care Monday.

According to police, the woman was watching six other infants at her Croton Avenue home when the baby, named Monica, died. They say the sitter didn't notify police of the death and instead waited until the child's mother arrived approximately an hour and 20 minutes later.

Investigators are waiting for toxicology results, but say there was no sign of trauma or bruising on the baby's body. There was also no evidence to suggest Shaken Baby Syndrome or that something had blocked her airway.

Detectives are looking into whether the day care center had a valid license and are asking parents who have ever left their children at the home to contact them at 914-941-9513.
