Pope John Paul II to be beatified at the Vatican

Over a million people descend upon the Vatican Sunday for a special beatification Mass for the late Pope John Paul II.

The pontiff had once visited the Hudson Valley in 1995.

Monsignor Christopher Maloney, of the St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers, says beatification is the first step on the road to sainthood. It means the church has accepted one of the two required miracles to be called a saint.

The late pontiff will now be called Blessed Pope John Paul II.

Monsignor Maloney says he is unsure when the sainthood process will be completed, but said that he thinks that John Paul II and Mother Theresa will be made saints together.
