Indian Point reactor switches to backup power after blip

(AP) - Federal regulators say one of the reactorsat a nuclear power plant in the New York suburbs had to switch tobackup power for about two hours.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Neil Sheehan saidTuesday that the automatic switch to diesel generators worked theway it's designed to. He said the reactor, Indian Point 2 inBuchanan, remained at full power. Indian Point 3, the other reactorat the site, was unaffected.

Plant owner Entergy Nuclear said there was no emergency orrelease of radioactivity.

Sheehan said breakers at a switchyard sensed a fault and opened,cutting off electric power at about 11 a.m. He said the precisecause was not immediately known.

Entergy spokesman Jerry Nappi said electrical power was restoredwithin about two hours.
