Jury deadlocked on top count in ex-cop's manslaughter trial
? Jurors in a former Eastchester cop's manslaughter trial told the judge today that they were deadlocked on the top charge, but were sent back to continue deliberations.
James Pileggi has been charged with manslaughter in the killing of Andre Everett in Nov. 2009 in New Rochelle.
Pileggi has testified that he was taking his off-duty pistol apart to show his friend and two other men the laser he installed on the gun when it went off.
The defense insists the shooting was a tragic accident, but prosecutors contend that with his training as a police officer, Pileggi was reckless in his handling of the gun.
If Pileggi is acquitted on the manslaughter charge, the jury can then consider two lesser charges of negligent homicide or reckless endangerment.
