New Rochelle parents concerned as school cuts considered
More than 100 New Rochelle residents attended a budget preview meeting last night to get a sneak peek at what is being proposed for next year's budget, and according to those in attendance, very few people were happy with what they learned.
It was standing room only in the New Rochelle High School library as parents and residents learned that the $229 million budget proposal would include nearly $8 million in budget cuts.
The cuts would include the elimination of about 100 staff positions within the school system, including many elective programs like music, art and sports.
Another key issue would be the elimination of some $2 million in funding, which would cut school bus service for all students who attend school outside of the district, except for those students with special needs.
