Former Iona nun pleads guilty on embezzlement charges

A former Iona College nun has entered a guilty plea on charges that she embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from the college over a 10-year period.

Sister Marie Thornton was accused of stealing more than $850,000 from the New Rochelle college by submitting false vendor invoices and credit card bills.

Thornton faces up to 10 years in prison when she's sentenced. Iona College officials say they have received most of the money back and consider the case closed.
