Floodwaters inundate St. Mary's Cemetery in Yonkers

Parts of a Yonkers cemetery are completely submerged under water this afternoon after intense rains blanketed the area.

A stream running through St. Mary's Cemetery on Sprain Road overflowed, leaving about 10 feet of water over 2-foot bridges and countless tombstones.

Jerry Sysak, the cemetery's foreman, says he has never seen flooding this bad in his 38 years at St. Mary's. He says the water levels never recovered after the rains from earlier in the week.

Crews are cleaning out the storm drains, but Sysak says their work might not be able to repair the cemetery's extensive damage. Sysak says crews cannot pump out the excess water because they have nowhere to put it.
