Police rescue Pace University students from fire

Two White Plains police officers rescued several Pace University students after a fire broke out in the kitchen of their off-campus house on Grant Avenue.

White Plains police officers Jeff Park and Derrick Montiero said they responded to a fire at 24 Grant Ave. at 9 a.m. They went door-to-door, waking about seven Pace University students who were asleep.

According to the firefighters, the fire started in the house's kitchen and spread to the attic, where no one was living. There were smoke detectors in the house, and fire officials said they will investigate whether they were working.

The university's housing department is helping three of the students who need a place to stay before the damage is repaired.
